DEVELOPING BETTER COGNITIVE SKILLS IS EASIER THAN YOU THOUGHT
When we talk about cognitive skills we are talking about important brain skills that will make our life easier and us smarter people. The main cognitive skills that people try to improve are the ability to solve problems fast, organizing information for better focusing, attention, memory, and the ability to learn and absorb as much information from what is around us. As many may think that we are born with these skills and we cannot acquire them during life, this belief is wrong! Here are some of the best and easy ways that will allow you to develop and improve your cognitive skills.
1. LIVE A LESS STRESSFUL LIFE
Remember some of the moments when you were much stressed. How did stress affect you in this specific situation? Do you remember being unable to focus on other issues? In fact, this is what stress does; it makes your attention unstable which makes you lose focus. In order to live a less stressful life, try to avoid stressful situations and find ways to release the stress you cannot avoid in your life. Physical activity is a great way to do so.
2. MAKE TIME FOR MEDITATION
Meditating helps reduce and slow down the progression of cognitive brain disorders related to age such as Alzheimer's. A study made by the University of California found that meditating for one hour per day improves skills related to memory and focus. There are different ways and aims for meditation but controlling the thoughts and quieting the mind are the most sought for.
3. KEEP YOUR BODY HYDRATED
Water is the solution to every health problem, and your brain needs it as much as your body. Based on many studies’ results, dehydration can lead to attention and concentration deficit. Therefore do not forget to keep your body hydrated as much as possible. So how much fluids should you be drinking? Men need a minimum of 2.5 liters of water while women shouldn’t go for less than 2 liters per the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).
4. SLEEP WELL
A good night sleep is as important as good nutrition or drinking a lot of water. And do you know why? Because lack of sleeping affects almost all of your cognitive skills especially memory and attention, and it also deprives your brain of focusing on the smallest tasks. Make sure that you are getting at least 7 hours of sleep every night.
5. BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE
Exercising is another activity that helps keep your body and mind healthy. One study found that people who exercise had a tissue density loss in the brain lower than those who don’t. Furthermore, exercise increases blood flow to the hippocampus, responsible for memory. What are you waiting for to hit the gym?
6. PLAY BOARD GAMES, READ AND SOLVE PUZZLES
These games are not only a great way to have fun with friends during a night-in, but they can also contribute to making your brain skills unbeatable.
