Whether you have an exhaustive lifestyle or you already suffer from depression, there are many things you can do or stop doing to improve your mental health. With life’s demands, it can be easy to feel anxious and depressed. While depression is common among people, therapists do suggest some changes that can be helpful. Here are 5 lifestyle changes that can help you avoid and get rid of depression.
1- EAT HEALTHILY
Your body and your mental health are connected more than you know. Start by cutting out junk food which is unhealthy for both. Consume more fatty acids which are found in fish, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables to get enough supply of omega 3 and 6. Increase the intake of amino acids which you can find in meat and dairy products. And finally, make sure you get enough complex carbohydrates to increase serotonin in your body.
2- BE ACTIVE
Being active contributes to improving your overall health. It is important that you decide on a routine and that you commit to it. Subscribe to a gym membership, create a walking routine, or even create your home workout plan and fix dates on which you will be active. Make sure that you show up for every training session even if you don’t feel like it. The first few times could be hard and you might want to give up, but once you are at it, you will be addicted. Being active helps you get rid of stressful emotions rather than keeping them built up.
3- LAUGH AND HAVE FUN
What is life if we don’t try to enjoy it at every chance we get? Make sure that you prioritize enjoying yourself once in a while. Go out with your friends or even by yourself, watch the movie that will make you laugh, pamper yourself with gifts and treatments. Always think of yourself as the partner you can never live without and do whatever makes you happy.
4- TALK TO SOMEONE
Everybody is prone to negative emotions during the day, however, when we do not deal with these emotions they build up and could lead to something far more disturbing and dangerous. Make sure that you vent to someone about your feelings. Find solutions with them and solve recurrent issues. In case you do not feel like talking to someone, you can write your feelings down. What is important is that you let them out and avoid trapping inside you with lots of negative feelings.
5- SLEEP WELL
An unrested body is more likely to be stressed. When you lie awake in your bed you give your brain many reasons to think and overthink which could lead to depression. Instead, give your brain the needed rest so it avoids thinking. Furthermore, a good night's sleep means that you are giving your body and your brain enough energy to do and feel good the next day. Make it a routine to sleep at least 8 hours every night, and try to be in bed before midnight.
