The brain is indeed a mysterious organ of our body. However, trying to understand it can make it less mysterious and more understandable for us. In this article we will talk about the brain’s parts that you need to know about and care for.
WHAT IS THE CNS (CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM)?
The central nervous system is made of the spinal cord and the brain. In fact, the brain is the organ that controls not only the memory, but also the emotions, touch, thoughts, vision, motor skills, breathing, hunger and even temperature, alongside other processes that happen in your body. After understanding the overall functions of the brain, let us try to understand its parts. The brain is made up of the cerebellum, the brainstem and the cerebrum. Let’s go more into details: - The cerebellum is the part that is located at the back of the brain and the back of the head. It has a function to maintain equilibrium, posture, and balance, and to synchronize voluntary muscle movements. - The brainstem is the middle of the brain and includes the medulla, the pons and the midbrain. The functions of this area are not limited to involuntary muscle movements, relaying sensory messages (such as hot, pain, and loud), movement of the eyes and mouth, cardiac function, sneezing, respirations, consciousness, swallowing, coughing, and even vomiting. - The cerebrum is the front of the brain and is made of the left and right hemispheres. The two spheres are joined by what is called the corpus callosum. The role of this part is to coordinate movements, initiate movements, learning, coordination of emotions, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, touch, judgment, and vision. To go into even more details we will discuss the other parts of the brain which include:
PONS:
this part is found in the brainstem and is considered a deep part of the brain. They contain several control areas for the eye and face movements. Medulla: this is part of the brainstem and is the lowest point of it. It is considered the most important part of the whole brain as it controls the lungs and the heart of the individual. Spinal cord: the spinal cord is made of nerve fibers that take place in the back, which spreads from the lower back up to the base of the brain. It carries signals and messages from the brain to the remaining parts of the body. Frontal lobe: this is the biggest section of the brain that is situated in the front of the head. It is responsible for personality movements and characteristics. It also helps you recognize details such as smells. Parietal lobe: this is the middle part of the brain, and it aids the individual to recognize objects and to understand spatial relationships. This part is responsible for understanding touch and pain in the body. Occipital lobe: this is the back part of the brain that is responsible for the human’s vision.
