HOW DOES COVID-19 IMPACT THE BRAIN?

It has been almost two years now since covid-19 had spread around the world. It changed everything with it, making our health fragile and our most precious thing to save. Covid is a virus that gets to the body, however, other parts of the body have also been affected such as the brain. The coronavirus has been recorded to trigger lots of neurological problems such as confusion, delirium, strokes, and sometimes forgetfulness. According to the latest research, there are many ways in which COVID-19 may harm the brain. Let’s discover together, how COVID-19 impacts the brain.

1- SEVERE INFECTION

Many COVID 19 cases showed that the virus is causing severe infection in the brain. Some researchers have shown that the disease is entering the bloodstream and from there is getting to the brain. And that is proven because labs have found it in the spinal fluid and the brain cells. Others showed that the virus is getting to the brain through the nose “the olfactory bulb", that’s why we suffer from the loss of smell.

2- THE BLOOD COULD GET THICKER

Blood clots appear in the arteries and keep the blood from getting to the brain and the oxygen from reaching the specific area; as result the percentage of strokes increases, and even though some patients are taking blood thinners there is still a big risk of them having strokes.

3- MORE PEOPLE EXPERIENCE MENTAL ILLNESSES AFTER COVID

Covid-19 has been found to have augmented negative moods in a lot of people. Many have experienced the feeling of depression, tiredness, anger. Some of them explained this as “feeling trapped and turning in a small circle, where you can't let get out, you feel alone, not ready to start a conversation.” Many have also found themselves appreciating solitude more after they were infected by COVID. They believe that it felt better not to give any permission to anyone to help them out.

4- IT COULD AFFECT CONCENTRATION AND MEMORY

Have you felt forgetful and unable to concentrate while having COVID, or even after your recovery? Sever reasons are responsible for this big problem such as fatigue, fear, and anxiety, low mood, brain inflammation, acute respiratory distress syndrome, stroke, some people experience mild difficulties that don’t last for long. When your memory is affected, you may find it difficult to hold and remember information. You may struggle to recall something that has happened or forget to take your medication on time. It may be more difficult to do two things at the same time and not be distracted when trying to concentrate on your tasks. In conclusion, the coronavirus has proved to everyone that it cannot be underestimated. It is not like any other virus that has existed as it does not affect the person while he or she is infected with it but can leave unwanted and long-term consequences. The only solution remains to be extra careful, wear a mask, and try to get the vaccine. Until then stay safe to keep your brain safe.
