THE IMPORTANCE OF DRINKING WATER FOR THE BRAIN

Water is essential for the overall body and for us to survive. Without water we could die in the longer term, however, drinking water insufficiently has also lots of negative consequences on the body and the brain. For this reason, scientists have put lots of effort into trying to understand the effects of drinking water on the brain. In this article, we will try to talk about the importance of drinking water for our brain.

1- DRINKING WATER INCREASES OXYGEN AND BLOOD FLOW TO YOUR BRAIN

Blood flows to all your body especially your brain. The cerebral blood flow is essential to help you maintain good brain health. Your brain uses up to 20% of the oxygen that is available to function and requires healthy oxygen and blood flow to do so. Dehydration affects cerebral blood flow and overall brain function.

2- IT IMPROVES CONCENTRATION

Not drinking water means you will have difficulties focusing throughout the day. Many studies have found that brain cells depend on H20 and how the latter reacts with different elements of the body. This reaction gives brain cells their efficiency and makes it easier for you to concentrate. Therefore, drinking more water means improving your focus ability especially in mind-stimulating games.

3- MAINTAINED MEMORY

We’ve already mentioned that dehydration impacts your ability to think clearly, however that’s not it, as it can also affect the way you remember things. Many studies have proven that moderate to mild dehydration levels can affect your short-term memory. Memory loss is linked to aging, but it can still be prevented somehow. Usually, dehydration is a common problem among older people and this can lead to a faster memory degeneration. Therefore, keep yourself hydrated to keep your memory active and strong.

4- BALANCED MOOD AND EMOTIONS

Hydration can also impact how you feel as a study has proven that even mild dehydration can affect your mood. The study consisted of 26 men and 25 women and they were all reported as healthy and moderately active. At the end of the research, both groups experienced difficulties in concentration and fatigues, as well and change in mood. This means that during our ordinary and daily activities, mild dehydration can affect your moods and feelings and could be an obstacle to you. The study also proved that women are more prone to have their moods affected by dehydration than men. Therefore, no matter how you are feeling, make sure that you drink enough water so that you are not dehydrated and so you can fight mood swings and emotions. Also, remember that the thirst feeling appears when the dehydration has already begun. Finally, we recommend that you drink a minimum of 7 cups of water daily and increase that amount if you are physically active. Make sure that you drink every hour and a half so your body doesn’t feel dehydrated and all the negative effects we’ve mentioned would kick in. keep your body hydrated to keep it working well!
