3 WAYS TO DEAL WITH OVERWHELMING EMOTIONS

Overwhelming emotions are everywhere. They can make you feel overpowered and as if you are drowning in them. When you are going through an overwhelming emotion you feel like this will last forever and you cannot control it. However, you are past these emotions you realize that everything will pass and you will feel better again until you are going through it again. For this reason, we wrote this article to bring you 3 ways to deal with overwhelming emotions.

1- BE AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR BODY

Emotions are not just feelings that go through your brain, but also physical sensations in your body. If you try to understand them well you will be able to understand what is going on in your mind that is causing the physical reactions. For example, some feelings are usually followed by specific physical reactions such as headaches, tightness in the throat or stiffness in the shoulders. According to a “body-map” developed by researchers, almost every emotion manifests physically in a certain place in your body. Therefore the physical feeling you go through due to an overwhelming emotion can help you know what the reason behind the emotion is, and maybe be able to control it. For most emotions, relaxing breathing is a good way to calm your mind and body. When the body is calm, the brain will be able to calm down faster and vice versa.

2- CONNECT WITH YOUR INNER FLOW

You must connect with your inner flow to accept the feelings you are going through and let them go. This means being mindful of your situation rather than being judgmental and tough to yourself. By giving your chance to be aware of your thoughts and emotions, and seeing them as temporary issues, you are creating a distance between yourself and the emotions. This will help you see them from afar and have more control over them and regulate them in the right way. To do so, you need to practice mindfulness, which requires that you observe your feelings and thought through neuroplasticity over time. Mindfulness helps improve your brain and rewire it to be less reactive and calmer. Your feelings could still feel strong, however, with mindfulness, you will learn to see them as phases that do not define you and your identity. Mindfulness is an important tool that can help every individual build brain pathways and inner resources to deal with their emotions. It can also strengthen your mental resilience and strength, and be part of your life to make you a healthier and happier person.

3- WRITE ABOUT YOUR EMOTIONS

Mindful journaling is a helpful way especially when you feel overwhelmed. It will help you understand your emotions on a deeper level. Writing what you are feeling helps you read your thoughts and understand better the things you are going through. Once your feelings are translated into words they will feel less than they are, and you will be able to control them and understand that they will not last forever.
